What can I do as a volunteer at the Santa Barbara Zoo?
There are many different opportunities once you join the Santa Barbara Zoo Volunteer Program including public education, assisting animal keepers, lorikeet attendant, clerical duties, special events, storytime, and grounds beautification.
How long do I have to volunteer for?
We ask that all of our public education and animal care aide volunteers commit to a minimum of one year. However, if you are interested in volunteering for a shorter period of time, we have special events such as Boo at the Zoo, Zoo-to-Do, and Dignatarios that we train for on an event-specific basis.
How old do I need to be to volunteer?
All volunteers working as animal care aides must be over the age of 18, however we have a special volunteer program for 13 to 17 year olds. Please refer to the youth volunteer portion of the website.
Will volunteering with the Santa Barbara Zoo lead to employment?
Not necessarily. Joining the volunteer program will not guarantee you employment at the Santa Barbara Zoo. If you are interested in seeking employment, please refer to the Employment Listings portion of the website to view current job openings.
Does it cost anything to join the volunteer program at the Santa Barbara Zoo.
There is a $95 training fee for non-members ($80 fee for SB Zoo Members) for the 40-hour training. This fee includes the uniform shirt, name badge, uniform vest, animal fact book, and all other training materials.
When are the trainings held?
The trainings are held two times per year and are generally in the weekday evenings and/or Saturdays. Please check back soon for the dates of the next volunteer training.
FAQ's for Youth Volunteers
How old do I need to be to volunteer?
All youth volunteers must be between the ages of 13 and 17 during their service and training.
Can I get community service for high school graduation?
Yes! However, you must provide the Teen Programs Coordinator with the official form from your school. We only keep records on file for three years, so you must have the form filled out and completed within three years that you complete your community service.

What can I do as a volunteer at the Santa Barbara Zoo?
Currently, teens can volunteer in the Summer months with Theater Gone Wild, children's theater performed by teen volunteers, and as Counselors in Training with our award winning Zoo Camp. There will be more opportunities to come in 2009! Look forward to the launch of a new, expanded teen volunteer program.
