Connection Classes

Bare Necessities
Ideal for: 1st grade
Theme: While our outside appearances may be different, what animals need to survive are the same things we need to survive.

California State Standards Connection: Life Sciences Standard 2 (a) Students know both plants and animals need water, animals need food, and plants need light.

This exciting class introduces students to the basic needs of all animals: food, water, and shelter. Your students will learn about the ways that many of our zoo animals provide for their basic needs of food, shelter, and water in an exciting, interactive class setting. Students will become experts on the primary needs of animals and how many of our zoo animals meet those needs in the wild.

Tooth Tales
Ideal for: 1st grade
Theme: In a world of constant choices, restaurant menus being no exception, we can discover which tasty dishes different animals prefer simply by examining their teeth.

California State Standards Connection: Life Sciences Standard 2 (d) Students know how to infer what animals eat from the shapes of their teeth.

This course helps students to become dental detectives. The shape and size of an animal's teeth tells us a lot about their diet, and this class will help students to unravel the mystery of animal diets. Students will learn the differences between carnivores, herbivores, and omnivores and will use teeth to tell the difference. Students will leave this class with a whole new appreciation for taking a bite.

Animal Sleuths
Ideal for: 2nd grade
Theme: We can match baby animals to their parents because they are similar, even if they don't look exactly alike.

California State Standards Connection: Life Sciences Standard 4 (a) Students know that organisms reproduce organisms of their own kind and that the offspring resemble their parents and one another.

We have found a lost baby bird in the Zoo, and we need your help to get him back to his parents! Your students will discover clues as they investigate bird beaks, legs, feathers, and more as they try to find the right parents for our baby bird. Students will find out that they can find the right parents for this baby, even though he doesn't look much like his parents. They will leave excited to find out more about the differences between animal moms and their babies!

Animal Encounters

Animal Encounters can be arranged for children of any age, and give your students a chance to get up close and personal with one of our Zoo's totally safe education animals. A Zoo Educator will bring out an animal from our collection and talk to your students about it. Depending on the animal you choose and the age of your students, they may even be able to touch! You can work with one of our Zoo Educators to choose an animal that will best emphasize your curriculum and will be the most exciting for your students. Available animals include a wide variety of birds, reptiles, amphibians, as well as a few small mammals from our collection.
